AUSTIN — In spite of the heat, many Austin neighborhood pools are still closed. The city said it is following the same schedule as last year.
But some people want to see them all open now.
The City of Austin said at this point, all municipal pools -- except for Mabel Davis Municipal Pool -- are open. That includes Barton Springs, Deep Eddy, Bartholomew and Garrison pools.
The next round of pool openings is this Friday. The city said most pools will be open by June 4, with the latest open by June 12.
The City said it is using a staggered opening approach due to staffing and because they said they follow Austin Independent School District's schedule. The district’s last day of school is Wednesday.
The city needs about 750 lifeguards; there are around 400 on the payroll currently.
The city's Aquatics Division said this is about the same amount as this time last year.
"I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to have all the lifeguards we need for the summer season,” said Jodi Jay, division manager for the Aquatics Division of Parks & Recreation Department. “But that means we can't let up. That means we still need to get out there and encourage folks to come in and apply. It's not too late."
Pay for city lifeguards starts at $13.84, but you can make more if you have experience.
You must be at least 15 years old and the schedules are flexible.
They need help seven days a week from early in the morning to late in the evening.
