Most swimming pools are built to last about 30 years.
The problem in Austin – the 36 public pools in the city are between 25 and 80 years old.
So again, this summer, the city plans to keep some pools closed.
It's tough to tell at first glance, but repairs there are underway.
"Givens Pool has had multiple leaks that we've had to go in and repair,” said Jodi Jay, Aquatic Division manager with the City of Austin.
She said at the end of last summer, the city found Givens Pool had been leaking 50,000 gallons of water per day as reported in the city's memorandum published last week.
No one is sure how long it had been leaking.
"We had witnessed water seeping through the pool wall into the pump room,” Jay said. “We were concerned about the stability of the pool.”
The Givens Pool is 59 years old and the city said it has exceeded its life expectancy and that any repairs that are made are only temporary solutions.
The city said it spent about $74,000 last year on the aging pool and expects to spend at least $200,000 on repairs.
"It's not going to sit empty for years,” Jay said. “We'll have it back up and running next summer."
These repairs will keep the pool running for five to seven more years. After that, the city said a complete renovation will be needed.
Givens Pool is expected to open in the summer of 2018. But the reality is that a program that would replace or renovate one pool per year would take 50 years.
