Cleburne toddler dies of accidental 'hanging'

Heath Lawson Bullard was just three years old.

The public online obituaries and memorials for three-year-old Heath Lawson Bullard, Jr., only begin to tell the tragedy that took his little life.

"A mother called in frantically about her child who was not breathing," says Lt. Tim Jones of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. He says deputies responded to the Bullard family home in Cleburne Saturday night.

"It appears the child was strangled with something in the house accidentally," Jones says.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled his death an accidental hanging. Multiple sources tell News 8 a cord from window blinds played a role in his death. It's an issue ABC News has reported on in the past, citing hundreds of deaths over recent decades from the very same issue.

"Our hearts are saddened that two children in the last seven days have passed away from the cords on window covering products," says Linda Kaiser with Parents For Window Blinds Safety. Kaiser says the second of those deaths was near Houston.

Kaiser lost a child in the same manner and has been pushing for changes in the window blinds industry since-- specifically, she's pushing for cordless blinds.

She says the little boy's death is the 11th this year nationwide, and the 40th in Texas since 1980.

"My heart always sinks for any parent that has to go through this tragedy," she says.

"I cannot imagine how they feel. I really couldn't," says Lt. Jones.

According to online records, the little boy's funeral will be at the Lane Prairie Baptist Church Wednesday. An online obituary says the little boy is survived by his parents and a sister.
