The Texas Commission for Enviornmental Quality has approved a permit for a waste transfer station proposed for a lot in Cedar Creek.
Lealco, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, made the initial proposal.
"TCEQ simply turned a deaf ear to the concerns of the council governments," said Paul Pape, Bastrop County Judge.
The facility is expected to be built across the street from a neighborhood. That's what officials are worried about.
"They're concerned about odor. They're concerned about trash blowing around. They're concerned about the number of trucks that'll be coming and going every single day -- just ruining their peace and quiet in their residential neighborhood," said Pape.
Bastrop County already has two other waste transfer stations. This one would take up to 2,500 tons of waste a day and is expected be built in the 100-year flood plain.
"It could be an environmental nightmare. If Cedar Creek floods to the level of where this pad is built up, it would be washing potentially tons of solid waste down the creek," said Pape.
In a statement, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said:
"The application was received on March 10, 2017 and the registration was issued on May 29, 2018. A public meeting took place on Sept. 18, 2017 where folks had the opportunity to make comments. The transfer station will not be built on a flood plain. If operated properly we anticipate no negative impact on public health and the environment. If members of the public have a complaint they can file one online or by calling: 888- 777-3186."
