AUSTIN, Texas — As Central Texas continues its streak of hot temperatures, it’s important to stay hydrated and out of the sun whenever possible. However, for those who are unhoused, keeping safe from the extreme heat can become an increasingly difficult task.
To help combat this issue, the Trinity Center Inclement Weather Cooling Center Pilot Project is extending its hours for unhoused individuals to enjoy air conditioning and community.
From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays through Sept. 30, St. David’s Episcopal Church will welcome up to 60 people at a time, offering food, showers, clothing and more to those who need services.
If you're interested in helping out, the center is currently searching for volunteers to assist with food distribution, meal preparation, working at the front desk and more. You can also donate food, supplies and clothing if you're unable to volunteer.
The center is located at 304 E. 7th St., and additional hours are added when Excessive Heat Warnings are underway. In total, the project costs $73,800.
Other cooling options are also available throughout the Austin area. In total, there are currently 46 active centers at Austin Public Libraries and recreation sites, including the Little Walnut Creek Branch, Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center and Howson Branch.
Additional services offered by The Trinity Center
The three-month-long cooling center project was started in July by The Trinity Center, along with the city's Homeless Strategy Office.
"This collaboration is a vital step in ensuring the well-being and safety of our most vulnerable residents," Austin Homeless Strategy Officer David Gray said. "Especially during the extreme heat of the summer months."
Since 1999, the center has been a nonprofit dedicated to helping unhoused Austinites by offering church services, free clothes "shopping" opportunities for women, bus passes, financial guidance and more.
All six members of the team volunteer their time to the community, and they welcome donations and help from people of all ages.
