Neiman Marcus warns customers that their data may have been compromised in data breach

According to the retailer, the May 2024 breach may have compromised customer names, contact information, dates of birth and Neiman Marcus gift card numbers.

DALLAS — Dallas-based luxury retailer Neiman Marcus is warning customers that their information may have been compromised after an unauthorized third party reportedly gained access to a database platform used by the business.

According to Neiman Marcus Group (NMG), a total of 64,472 customers were affected by this data breach, which exposed personal information such as names, contact information, dates of birth and Neiman Marcus gift card numbers.

Promptly after discovering the incident, NMG took steps to contain it, including by disabling access to the platform," NMG said in a statement to WFAA. "We also began an investigation with assistance from leading cybersecurity experts and notified law enforcement authorities."

According to NMG, gift cards to the retailer are still valid and can be redeemed in stores and online using the number and PIN.

NMG sent a letter to affected customers on Monday, encouraging them to order a free credit report from one of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies, which they are entitled to under U.S. law.

The retailer is also encouraging affected customers to report incidents of identity theft or fraud to law enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission and their state attorney general.

NMG also asked customers to consider placing a security freeze on their credit files, which would prevent potential creditors from accessing them through consumer reporting agencies without their consent.

Customers with more questions about the incident are encouraged to call 1-885-889-2743 toll-free Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
