AUSTIN, Texas — Election season is over, but dozens of political signs are getting new life.
The Neill-Cochran House Museum in Austin’s West Campus neighborhood hosted its De-sign Austin event on Sunday.
Kids of all ages could repurpose donated campaign signs into unique creations like boxes or birdhouses.
The museum also hosted the event after the 2022 midterms.
“It was very popular then,” said Karen Kincaid Brady, Business and Programming Director at Neill-Cochran House Museum. “It’s a great STEM activity, and it gets kids kind of excited, thinking about elections, thinking about what happens after them, but also getting kids to think about different ways of doing things with old things.”
Kincaid Brady said keeping the signs out of the landfill aligns with the museum’s mission of preservation.
“Our last few election cycles, they’ve been very tense,” said Kincaid Brady. “So, this is a way to also make something new and something better and, hopefully, a way to start healing.”
The museum's next event is a holiday tea party on Saturday, Dec.r 7.
Its next “Sunday Funday” event will be the following day, Dec. 8, where participants can make their own wrapping paper.
