AUSTIN -- The deadline for victims of a Western Union money wiring scam to file claims is approaching. The deadline to file the free claim is on May 31.
Thousands of Texans could be eligible for the refund following a federal investigation into Western Union after consumers lost money to a scammer wiring money between January 1, 2005, and January 19, 2017. The refunds are part of the joint investigation between the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Western Union agreed to pay a $586 million settlement, and the DOJ is ensuring that money is refunded to victims. When the claim is filed, the DOJ will check with the Treasury Offset Program to make sure victims do not owe money to the federal government, which may reduce the refund. Consumers who sent multiple wire transfers can also file a claim for each case, according to a press release from the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB warned of other possible scams related to this refund, such as con artists sending emails seemingly about the Western Union settlement asking for personal information. The BBB says you cannot apply for a refund by email. To file a claim, click here.
Examples of expenses that are not eligible for the refund include Western Union fees and losses or transfers sent through other businesses. According to the FTC, the refund could take up to a year to process.
The BBB also warned of other types of scams that requested money to be transferred:
Romance Scams: A person you meet online expresses interest in you romantically. When you are serious with your new friend they ask for money to travel to see you, for medical services, or to help a family member.
Advance Fee Loans: A loan is offered, but there is a fee that must be paid upfront prior to the issuing of the loan. The fee is for a processing fee or insurance.
Lottery or Prize Scams You are informed that you have won a prize or are a winner in a lottery. To collect your prize, you must pay taxes, shipping or other fees upfront.
