Decker Dam at Lake Walter E. Long getting upgrades after 57 years

The new project will replace the dam's gates and anchors.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Decker Dam at Lake Walter E. Long in East Austin is set to receive an upgrade – 57 years after it was first installed.

Austin Energy announced a new project that will begin next year to replace the dam's gates and anchors.

The city of Austin uses the water in Lake Walter E. Long to power the Decker Power Plant nearby.

Officials expect the project to start in spring 2025 and be completed by 2027.

While the project is being worked on, lake levels will be lower, forcing the closure of boat ramps. However, access for canoes and kayaks will still be available.
