MANCHACA, Texas — Editor's note: Police originally reported April 24 that Hughes' body was found in the front yard. A correction was issued on April 27 stating her body was found in the back yard. The story has been updated.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) announced April 27 that Hays County deputies located the body of the Manchaca homicide investigation suspect.
The sheriff's office said patrol deputies responded to the 600 block of Hickory Ridge Road just before 10 a.m. on April 16.
Deputies found the body of Janice Hughes, 70, lying in the back yard unresponsive. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
There was no evidence of trauma, and nothing about the scene or body appeared suspicious at the time, the sheriff's office said.
According to TCSO, an autopsy discovered a small pellet in the woman's lung was the cause of death. The 911 caller, 59-year-old Daniel "Dan" Carnahan, was named a suspect and a warrant for his arrest was issued on April 25.
The sheriff's office said deputies found pellets while executing a search warrant in Carnahan's home that were similar to the pellet found in the woman's lung.
Additionally, the sheriff's office said they received a tip claiming Carnahan had been asking friends to give him gas money and a gun.
TCSO said Hays County deputies Carnahan's body on Monday, April 27.
TCSO also said multiple witnesses informed detectives of a property line dispute between Carnahan and the woman.
TCSO said the homicide case remains open and will not close until all evidence has been fully processed and every possible lead has been thoroughly explored.
