Austin police reveal new details about body pulled from Lady Bird Lake on Sunday

The case is not being investigated as a homicide, police said.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department revealed new details on Wednesday about a body pulled from Lady Bird Lake over the weekend.

Police said around 2:16 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, a 911 caller reported a man who had gone underwater near the 500 block of W. Cesar Chavez St. in Downtown Austin.

The caller told police the man was screaming and yelling before crawling onto the bank and rolling into the water. He said he could hear the man screaming while swimming and punching the air, until he went underwater and failed to resurface.

The Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the scene and were able to locate and pull the man out of the water. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man was pronounced dead at 3:11 p.m.

A witness told homicide detectives he had seen the man acting erratically while walking on the hike-and-bike trail. The man was reportedly screaming, punching trees and foaming at the mouth.

The witness told APD he then saw the man enter the water between the hike-and-bike trail and West Cesar Chavez Street, where he began swimming and continued to scream and punch before going underwater.

The man who died has not been identified.

APD said the case is not being investigated as a homicide.

Anyone with any additional information on the case is asked to contact APD at 512-974-TIPS or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 512-472-8477.
