AUSTIN, Texas — Firefighters were on the scene of a fire at an abandoned building in Downtown Austin on Monday evening.
According to the Austin Fire Department (AFD), crews responded to the fire in the 300 block of East Second Street around 8 p.m. AFD reported heavy fire on multiple stories and through the roof of the building.
As of 8:40 p.m., the fire was out and firefighters were putting out hot spots. Around 50 firefighters responded to the incident.
The public was asked to avoid the area of East Second Street and San Jacinto Boulevard.
On Tuesday, AFD said it could not yet confirm the cause of the fire but did say it involved a person experiencing homelessness. The damage to the structure is estimated at $50,000.
