Explosives found in U-Haul truck after wanted man from Washington arrested in Fredericksburg

Deputies said they also found numerous cans of ammunition, a handgun and body armor in the truck.

GILLESPIE COUNTY, Texas — Several explosive devices were uncovered inside a U-Haul box truck Wednesday in Fredericksburg.

According to the Gillespie County Sheriff's Office, the truck was sitting in their impound lot after a wanted man was arrested on Oct. 11.

As deputies searched the truck, they encountered multiple devices and called for support from San Antonio police, the FBI and other agencies.

Authorities determined the devices were too unstable to transport, which led to them creating a safety zone to detonate some of them. Other devices were rendered safe and removed by the bomb squad.

During the operation, numerous cans of ammunition, a handgun and body armor were also found inside the U-Haul.

Who was arrested?

Deputies received a tip about a wanted person traveling through the area in the box truck. Authorities were told the man was wanted out of Washington for stealing more than $400,000 worth of coins and precious metals.

The man, later identified as 46-year-old Zachary Richardson Rhyne, was later found a few miles south of Fredericksburg on Highway 87.

Rhyne remains in Gillespie County Jail and is expected to face more charges after being arrested on a larceny-theft warrant. Deputies also said they were able to recover the coins and precious metals.
