PHOENIX — Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris held a rally in Glendale, just outside of Phoenix, on Friday evening.
12News fact-checked a few of Harris' claims about former President Donald Trump that she made while speaking at the rally.
CLAIM
Trump would end the Affordable Care Act.
"If Donald Trump wins in November, he intends, he intends to end the Affordable Care Act and take us back to a time when insurance companies have the power to deny people with pre-existing conditions. You remember what that was?" Harris said at the rally.
THE ANSWER
Former President Donald Trump threatened in November 2023 to reopen the contentious fight over the Affordable Care Act after failing to repeal it while in the White House, saying he is “seriously looking at alternatives” if he wins a second term.
CLAIM
The bipartisan border security bill failed because of Trump.
"Earlier this year we had a chance to pass the toughest bipartisan border security bill in decades," Harris said. "But Donald Trump tanked the deal."
THE ANSWER
This claim is misleading. Trump took credit for the deal falling through but he doesn't have a vote in Congress and he was not the head of the Republican party at the time. The only people who could actually kill the deal were those who voted against it.
CLAIM
Trump would cut social security.
"Donald Trump intends to give a tax break to billionaires and big corporations," Harris claimed. "He intends to cut Social Security and Medicare."
THE ANSWER
Yes, and no. Let us explain.
Trump hasn't been specific about cuts to Social Security benefits but he does want to cut Social Security taxes. Most experts agree that would bankrupt the program faster since taxes pay for the program.
CLAIM
Donald Trump called for the termination of the United States Constitution.
THE ANSWER
This is true, and he put it in writing.
In a Truth Social post claiming the 2020 election was fraudulent, which it was not, Trump said "A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution."
