Fire crews respond to a grass fire in East Travis County

The 29-acre fire sparked on Friday at FM 973 and FM 969.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Austin area fire crews are cleaning up the remnants of a grass fire in East Travis County not far from Hornsby Bend.

The Austin Fire Department reported the fire is located at FM 973 and FM 969. Officials said late Friday that the fire burned about 29 acres. No structures were immediately threatened at this time.

At 6:30 p.m., AFD said the fire was "mostly contained." Around 9:30 p.m., the department said crews would remain on site until after midnight. They returned Saturday morning to mop up remaining smoldering.

STAR Flight and the Texas A&M Forest Service assisted with the response. The forest service used bulldozers to create containment lines.

The fire burned about a mile from the location of a 30-acre fire that happened on Wednesday afternoon.
