FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — In a recent report from Vaisala, a global leader in technological weather measurements, Flatonia, Texas, was named as the state's "lightning capital" in 2021.
To identify each capital, Vaisala analyzed a gridded density map to find the highest density grid cell in each state. It then identified that city or town that grid cell was associated with.
According to its report, Flatonia had 1,043 lightning events per square mile throughout last year.
Not only did Flatonia lead the state, it also led the nation in lightning strikes.
The second-highest city was Geneva, Florida, with 857 lightning strikes, followed by Maurepas, Louisiana, with 824 strikes.
Last on the list was Kalihiwai, Hawaii, with only 17 lightning strikes.
