AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN -- The Lower Colorado River Authority is investing nearly $10 million to replace the time-worn floodgates at Tom Miller Dam.
The project is set to begin next week and isn’t expected to cause any problems for boaters on Lake Austin.
The dam has nine floodgates that are used to send floodwaters downstream to help control the water supply in the Austin area and Central Texas.
The gates have not been replaced since the dam was originally constructed in the 1930s, officials said. Engineers who conduct regular inspections of the dam recommended in 2007 that the floodgates be reinforced or replaced by 2020.
The river authority decided to invest $9.9 million in new, custom-made floodgates authorities said ensure the quickest construction time and longest life for the dam, which generates hydroelectric power for Central Texans.
