FOODIE FRIDAY: Café Ybor brings authentic Cuban sandwiches – and then some – to Austin

KVUE's Daybreak team hopped on their food truck to see what the Cuban-influenced Austin food truck was cooking.

AUSTIN — Tampa has arrived in Austin and you reap the benefits.

Café Ybor serves authentic Cuban sandwiches and then some. KVUE's Daybreak team hopped on their food truck to see what they were cooking.

The story of Café Ybor began in Florida. Mike Coughlin learned how to cook there and he wanted to bring the flavors of Ybor city to Austin.

"Ybor City is the area in Tampa where all the cigar workers came to roll cigars. It is where the Cuban sandwich originated but all the cigar workers came from all over the world. So the tastes and flavor of the food was distinctive -- southern, Italian, Greek, Cuban -- all rolled into one," said Coughlin.

Knowing Texas could use a little Cuban flair, Coughlin built a food truck, drove about 1,000 miles west and opened up in Austin in 2014.

"So we are going to do a Texas beef and cheddar. We roast our own beef here," Coughlin said, as he showed KVUE how to make a "Texas beef and cheddar" sandwich.

There's a generous amount of meat on this gourmet sandwich and and its all placed on a toasted bistro onion roll.

"We have our bread baked locally and get it delivered every day," said Coughlin.

If you're vegetarian, you'll definitely want to try "The Asheville." It is a hearty sandwich.

"The Asheville has our Miami mayo which is our secret sauce. It has Swiss cheese, cucumbers, lettuce, pico de gallo, tomatoes and pickles on a toasted Cuban bread," he added. "We have a lot of people who aren't vegetarian who buy this."

And last but not least, a trip to Café Ybor would not be complete without their traditional Cuban style sandwich: "The Miami."

It's piled high with baked ham, roasted pork, genoa salami and Swiss cheese. The sandwich is grilled so the meat is caramelized.

Every sandwich comes with a side such as fruit, homemade soups or Greek potato salad, depending on what's in season. The menu also offers salads and desserts.

You can find Café Ybor at Cedar Valley Eats off Nutty Brown Road nights and on Saturday. Monday through Friday the truck travels to different office parks around town. They post their schedule on their Facebook page and their Twitter.
