Drought conditions worsen across Texas | Drier, hotter pattern to last through August

Serious heat is in the forecast through early next week as the heat dome gains strength over Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — Thursday means another drought monitor has been released for Texas, and there are some important changes compared to last week.

Areas not in a drought dropped by roughly 10% from last week, which is a staggering number considering how much fluctuation there has been throughout the year.

Additionally staggering is the %5 increase in areas in a "moderate" drought throughout Texas. In Central Texas, we did not have much of a change in the drought.

While the lack of change in our area is good news, the not-so-good news is that we expect a drier pattern and hotter as well.

The outlook over the next six to 10 days shows very likely above-average temperatures and likely below average precipitation not only for our area but for all of the Lone Star State as well.

This will manifest itself as we head into the weekend and early next week.

Thursday is slated to be the "least hot" of the next seven days, with highs around 102 for the weekend. Highs could hit 103 to 104 early next week.

Additionally, we're tracking "feels like" temperatures to get close to 110 for the start of next week. Thus, if you have any outdoor plans, be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade. You could even limit outdoor time altogether or postpone it until the evening hours.
