AUSTIN -- Cedric Benson, 31, was charged with public intoxication early Sunday morning in Austin.

According to KVUE's partners at the Austin-American Statesman, police were called out to the 900 block of North Lamar Boulevard.

Police records show Benson was arrested following a verbal disturbance between a man and a woman in a taxi.

The former Longhorn running back was booked into the Travis County jail around 5:22 a.m. and released around 9 a.m.

It wasn't clear whether Benson has an attorney. A lawyer who previously represented Benson didn't immediately return messages.

Benson was a first-round pick who spent eight years in the NFL, with Chicago, Cincinnati and Green Bay. His final pro season was 2012.

In 2010, Benson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge for punching an Austin bar employee. A judge then sentenced him to 20 days in jail. He served five days.
