Memories pour in from Austinites as demolition of the Frank Erwin Center nears completion

Demolition is expected to be done by September.

AUSTIN, Texas — Memories of the Frank Erwin Center, also known as "The Drum," are pouring in as crews get closer to finishing the demolition.

The Frank Erwin Center opened in 1977, and the site will eventually become home to the University of Texas at Austin Medical Center, a joint project between UT and the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

"It's coming down, per plan," Dan Cook, UT’s executive director of Planning, Design and Construction, said.

As demolition on the 4,000 tons of steel and 135,000 tons of concrete continues,, UT grad Christine Carter shared that she started going to The Drum as early as the age of 7.

“As somebody who grew up in Austin, it feels like home,” Carter said.

Carter showed KVUE pictures dating back to the '70s with countless memories, including a Beach Boys concert with her family.

"Picture of my mother and in front of the Erwin Center right after it opened when John Denver first came, and this a picture of me by the John Denver stage," Carter said. "I am pretty proud of the program ... There you can see the burnt orange seats behind us. That's maybe '78, '79, '80."

On the sports side, as part of the UT marching band, Carter remembers the Lady Longhorn games – something she said she will always cherish.

"Always going to be sad to see it go, just because it was a huge part of my life," Carter said.

Demolition is expected to go into the fall and be complete by September.
