Fredericksburg dance hall destroyed in fire

The Fredericksburg Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that decimated the Turner Hall social dance club Sunday night.

Firefighters said they were called out to the building located on the 100 block of West Travis Street near Llano Street around 10:45 p.m.

The City of Fredericksburg said when crews arrived on the scene; the nearly 150-year-old dance hall was completely engulfed in flames. Additional equipment and firefighters from Willow City and Doss, both at least 20 minutes north of Fredericksburg, were called in to help out.

At 5 a.m. Monday, Authorities said the blaze was 95 percent contained, but the building was a total loss.

No one was injured.

The city said the Turner Hall or the Fredericksburg Social Turnverein was built in 1871 as a gymnastics school and bowling alley; it was one of the city's oldest establishments.

Over a century, officials said it was used as a community center and reception hall.
