AUSTIN, Texas — As temperatures soar in Central Texas, multiple Austin city services are joining together to promote emergency preparation, efficiency and sustainability among residents.

From June 11-13, a variety of free items will be available at three City of Austin Utility Customer Service Centers (UCSC) as part of a summer pop-up series. Each location will host one giveaway per day.

The event is hosted in collaboration with Austin Energy, Austin Water, Austin Resource Recovery and the City of Austin Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Each organization will offer its own unique supplies, including:

  • Austin Energy: low-flow shower heads
  • Austin Resource Recovery: reusable shopping bags and compostable bags
  • Homeland Security and Emergency Management: Neighborhood Preparedness Guides

Solar phone charges will also be available, as they can be utilized in instances when the power goes out.

Pick-up locations

All three locations will be open from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. or until supplies run out. The earlier you arrive, the more likely items will still be available.

Those interested can head to UCSC North on Tuesday, UCSC South on Wednesday and UCSC East on Thursday. Below are the specific pick-up addresses:

  • UCSC North: 8716 Research Blvd., Suite 115
  • UCSC South: 1901 W. William Cannon Dr., Suite 100
  • UCSC East: 2800 Webberville Rd.

As drought conditions continue throughout the state, Austin Water recommends using low-flow showerheads (available during the pop-up), taking showers five minutes or less and following schedules when mowing your lawn.

In the instance of an emergency, such as extreme heat conditions, Austin Homeland Security and Emergency Management recommends staying prepared by creating a supply kit with items like a change of clothes, blankets, personal documents and more.

By collecting the proper supplies, you can be best suited to handle an emergency.
