The Bush family confirmed on Tuesday that the 43rd president and his wife will be laid to rest at the Texas State Cemetery in East Austin when they pass away.
“I can confirm that president and Mrs. Bush have indeed selected the Texas State Cemetery in Austin as their final resting place. They never want to leave the home state they love. President Bush would just like to point out one thing: this doesn’t mean he already has one foot in the grave,” said Bush spokesman Freddy Ford in a statement.
Cemetery superintendent Harry Bradley provided the following statement to KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman:
“President and Mrs. (George W.) Bush have decided to be buried at the Texas State Cemetery. They are in the process of looking at various areas in the cemetery now. No final decision re design has been made at this time.
“There may be some updated information at a later date, but right now we are just getting started. The Texas State Cemetery Committee and cemetery staff are honored that President and Mrs. Bush have chosen the cemetery for their burial sites.”
George W. Bush and Laura Bush will both be 70 before the end of 2016. George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara plan to be buried at this presidential library in College Station. The 43rd president’s plans would make him the second president since John F. Kennedy to not be buried at the site of his presidential library. Lyndon B. Johnson was buried at his family cemetery in Stonewall, Texas.
