Georgetown council members decide not to delay demolition of rodeo arena

Another effort to save the historic Georgetown Rodeo seems to be over after city leaders voted not to delay the teardown of the arena in San Gabriel Park on Tuesday night.

GEORGETOWN — Another effort to save the historic Georgetown Rodeo seems to be over. City leaders voted not to delay the teardown of the arena in San Gabriel Park on Tuesday night.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Arena is located at 415 E. Morrow St. in San Gabriel Park. This facility was originally built in the 1940s, but rebuilt in the 1950s. Once plans came out this year to tear down the arena, rodeo supporters started to make their case to the Georgetown City Council. Supporters hoped to delay the demolition to provide time to figure out alternative options.

Tuesday night, council member Rachael Jonrowe led the discussion to keep the arena and show barn from coming down. Rodeo supporters also spoke before she asked for a second to this proposal. No other council member spoke up, so the request for a delay was never voted on.

This demolition was included in the park's 2015 master plan, which was a revision from the city's master plan accepted back in 2008. Many rodeo supporters said they did not know Georgetown was planning to remove their facility until earlier this year.

There is a group of supporters who created a "Save Georgetown Rodeo and Arena" Facebook page. Supporters used the page to thank council member Rachael Jonrowe for speaking up and also saying, "We are not done. We have other options. We will discuss and get back to you."

Both the arena and show barn are set to be torn down during the third of four planned phases of redevelopment to San Gabriel Park. As of October, no demolition dates have been announced.
