GEORGETOWN, Texas —
Students at Georgetown ISD were encouraged to bike or roll to school Wednesday morning.
The district took part in national "Bike or Roll to School Day," with extra guests greeting participants along the way.
First responders greeted students and taught them about safety practices, like wearing helmets and using the crosswalk.
District representatives hope this encourages students to be more active and get to know the first responders in the community.
Georgetown ISD also asked people who were out and about on the roads Wednesday to be more cautious in school zones and watch out for students.
"I think events like this just really help raise awareness to the fact that, you know, you might be running late for work, but you need to pay attention to school zones and we need to be careful and watch for pedestrians and our bike riders on the streets," Melinda Brasher, Georgetown ISD's Communications & Community Engagement executive director, said.
City staff from the Transportation Department came out to see how people travel to and from school so they can use that data in their plans for updates like sidewalk improvements.
Brasher said it's especially important to consider when planning for school zones to keep students safe.
"It's so important that we're paying attention to how people are traveling to and from school and around those communities, so that we can also work with people who are driving to school with our bus drivers. With motorcycle riders, anybody who's out and about traveling in those areas," she said.
District representatives said it's a great way to promote the broader message of safety in school zones and engagement between schools, families and the community.
