AUSTIN, Texas — The Hays County Sheriff's Office is ramping up its enforcement of speeding violations.
Starting Sept. 8, deputies with HCSO and Precinct 4 Constable’s Office are ramping up traffic enforcement on U.S. 290. Deputies are looking to crack down on excessive speeding and stop light violations in an effort to make the roads safer.
HCSO says the aim of the operation is not only to enforce hazardous driving violations, but also to increase voluntary compliance with traffic laws and to reduce crashes and and other traffic-related incidents.
Drivers traveling on U.S. 290 between Nutty Brown Road and Sawyer Ranch Road should be aware of increased patrols and enforcement.
One convenience store employee along the route applauded the move, telling KVUE he sees at least one crash weekly along that stretch of highway.
Josh Deragon, who drives that segment of U.S. 290 often, told KVUE he's "kind of on the fence" about more enforcement and believes other issues need addressing.
“I wish there were more streetlights, but definitely speeding can be a bit of an issue," said Deragon, speaking to KVUE on Sunday morning while filling up his gas tank along the route. "I suppose a moderate increase in policing, it could help. There’s a lot of construction, as well, which seems to be a bit of an issue.”
