AUSTIN, Texas — Officials with the Hays County Health Department (HCHD) report that several mosquitos obtained from traps in the Wimberley area have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The positive result was confirmed by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) on July 18. The samples were collected by health officials on July 11 in the 78676 ZIP Code.
The positive tests are the first discovered in Hays County in 2024, after the county did not have any positive samples in 2023.
In the state of Texas as a whole, there have been 1,051 positive mosquito pools for West Nile Virus reported so far in 2024, which is a slight uptick from the 913 positive samples collected throughout the state in 2023. The 2024 total includes two positive tests in Travis County and five positive samples detected in Williamson County so far.
