SAN MARCOS, Texas — The family of Malachi Williams is not done seeking justice for his death.
On Saturday, family members, supporters and advocates with the nonprofit organization Mano Amiga gathered to mark the six month anniversary since the 22-year-old died.
The family claims there were failures in the San Marcos Police Department's response on the night of April 11, when Williams was confronted by officers outside a convenience store.
"They need to be held accountable for their actions," Williams' sister, Kay, said.
In August, a Hays County grand jury cleared Officer Alcides "Alex" Ventura in the deadly shooting, determining that his actions were justified.
However, Williams' family claims that videos from the night paint a different picture.
"Rather than immediately rendering aid, officers instead turned Malachi on his stomach, handcuffed him, turned him back over onto his back and began searching his pockets and head again as he lay bleeding on the ground," Kay said.
KVUE is gathering more information about the videos obtained by Mano Amiga and the Williams family.
According to San Marcos police, Williams was shot and killed in the parking lot of an H-E-B. Body camera footage shows the exchange between Ventura and Williams.
Officers were confronting him in connection to a separate incident where two men had reported that Williams followed them out of the convenience store, and then threatened them with knives.
Williams was shot twice by Ventura. Authorities said they tried to save his life, but Williams did not survive. Williams' family disputes the notion that aid was rendered immediately.
"I never dreamed ... I never dared myself to dream that someone, some police officer, somebody that's supposed to be for the peace would kill my bloodline," Williams' grandfather Wayne Miller said.
The family is currently exploring legal action.
Ahead of the press conference, KVUE reached out to Hays County for a statement. A spokesperson responded, saying that they had no comment.
