Healthcare closer to home for Bastrop County residents

Seton Healthcare is building a new medical campus on a 32-acre plot of land on the corner of Highways 71 and 304.

People in Bastrop are looking forward to healthcare a little closer to home.

Seton is building a new medical campus on a 32-acre plot of land on the corner of Highways 71 and 304.

"I think it'd be great,” said Jorge Reyes, who grew up and lives in Bastrop. “I mean Bastrop is a growing community."

Reyes said a new hospital would mean more help for his mother.

"Currently, my mom goes into Austin to get cancer treatment,” said Reyes.

He agrees the once-a-month trip is an inconvenience.

"Absolutely,” he said. “She's elderly so she has to have someone drive her into Austin."

The campus will include both primary and specialty care doctors' offices.

Seton said when it is first built – the hospital will have eight in-patient rooms, 12 treatment rooms -- along with an emergency room.

Seton also plans to have a heli-pad for STAR Flight emergency calls.

"The main reason we're doing this facility is because Bastrop itself is growing so fast,” said Greg Hartman, chief of external affairs with Seton Healthcare. “It's one of the 50 fastest growing counties in the country."

Estimates indicate about 6,000 people will move to Bastrop County over the next five years.

Seton said it is investing millions into the project.

"Nearly 30 million dollars that we plan on investing in Bastrop over the next couple of years,” said Hartman.

Seton plans to break ground on the hospital by the end of this year and finish it by the end of next year.
