Austin Water is repairing a lift station in south Austin after approximately 50,000 gallons of wastewater was released into a stream near Bear Creek Saturday evening.
Austin water said heavy rains caused the overflow that was discovered at 5:00 p.m in the 2600 block of Frate Barker. The overflow was stopped four hours later, and crews were able to recover 40,000 gallons.
Officials said the spill doesn't impact Austin Water customers, but it can affect people within a half-mile of the spill who draw their water from a well.
People who use well-water are advised to boil it for at least a minute before drinking, cooking or bathing. Those people are also urged to get their water tested for contamination, according to Austin Water.
