HS in Round Rock makes students turn in phones before class to prevent distractions

Success High School in Round Rock started a new cell phone policy to prevent their students from being distracted from their school work.

ROUND ROCK,Texas — Success High School in Round Rock started a new cell phone policy for the school year.

Faculty asked students to place their phones in pouches at the beginning of class.

“It's so they’re not distracted while they’re working on their ingenuity courses,” said Valerie Burleigh, an English teacher at the school.

She said the students also have the option to keep their phones tucked away in their backpacks.

“We saw that students were constantly being distracted and it was affecting their progress,” said Burleigh.

She said she also places her phone in a pouch.

“It’s working well. We’ve seen a work increase in the amount of progress that students are making,” said Burleigh. “We noticed the students are having more authentic conversations, as well, because they are separated from their device.”

Austin Holden, who is a senior at the high school, said this new policy isn't all that bad.

“At first, I was kind of lenient on it, but then I realized how much progress I was starting to make and the classes I was starting to complete. So, then I became an advocate for it,” he said.

Holden admitted it took some time to get used to turning his cell phone in.

“You just kind of feel off from the world, but at the same time, you’re able to get your work done,” said Holden.
