Hundreds get a free meal for Christmas through Austin's Salvation Army

Volunteers with the Salvation Army Austin served free meals to hundreds on Monday.

AUSTIN — The Salvation Army Austin worked to serve hundreds of people on Monday.

Volunteers passed out plates of food to people at the downtown shelter.

Corey Leith, the communications director for Salvation Army Austin, said they expected to serve around 375 meals Monday afternoon.

"Salvation Army is year-round services, and this is just another way," said Leith. "Because sometimes we find out this is the only meal people are having a day."

Mackenzie Henson, a volunteer with the Salvation Army, said it's a fun way to give back.

"A lot of them are really thankful, a lot of them just haven’t seen this much kindness, and, also, a lot of them have a lot of different stories to share," said Henson, with a smile. "It’s just very cool."

Leith said there are plenty of ways people can volunteer with the Salvation Army Austin. For more information, click here.
