'We want him to stay locked up forever' | After 6-year-old son dies from attack in his own home, father calls for justice

Jeremy Tang Diaz was in the hospital fighting for his life before dying last week. Now, his father is calling for justice for his son.

ROUND ROCK, Texas — While seeing fellow families at the Play for All Abilities Park in Round Rock, Arturo Diaz simply wishes for his two sons – 6-year-old Jeremy Tang Diaz and 3-year-old Samuel – to join them.

"How do we tell our 3-year-old that his brother is no longer with us?" Arturo asked.

More than two months ago, 6-year-old Jeremy was attacked in his Georgetown home. According to an affidavit obtained by KVUE, 39-year-old Daniel Logan struck his mother with a baseball bat before forcing his way into his neighbor's home and assaulting Jeremy with the bat. Jeremy fought for his life and died about a week ago.

"The weekend before, my son and I were sitting there on a Sunday morning and [Logan] comes out and we wave, and he says hello, not knowing that that same man was going to be the one striking my son down," Arturo said. "I would have loved to see what kind of boy he would have been by who he was sure to be already. It would have been awesome. Unfortunately, I can't see that."

Logan faces two first-degree felony charges: injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. In an update, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said upon the Travis County Medical Examiner's findings, if warranted, law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office will present the case to a grand jury for the charges to be enhanced to capital murder.

"We just do not want him out. We want him to stay locked up forever," Arturo said.

Since the attack, the Central Texas community rallied to support Jeremy by raising thousands of dollars for his medical expenses, including holding a fundraiser in Round Rock by selling barbecue plates. For Arturo, that care and compassion is representative of the boy they all believed in.

"He was a wonderful boy, very simple. He gave another boy a Transformer that he said, 'Papa, I don't know if I should give it to him.' But then I said, 'It's up to you.' He turns around and he gives it to him. He was a giving boy," Arturo said.

Arturo hopes families can keep sharing that same love with each other.

"Take very good care of them and love them as if tomorrow would never come," Arturo said.

They are words he now takes to heart.

The family has a GoFundMe page for those who would like to give their support.
