AUSTIN, Texas — Officials with Austin Watershed Protection have detected a large amount of toxic blue algae in Lady Bird Lake.
According to officials, the presence of the algae is a rapid change from two weeks ago, when almost none was found in the lake. However, officials did say there was not much algae present on Lake Austin when it was visited on July 5.
When encountering natural bodies of water, it is recommended to keep the following in mind:
- Avoid contact with algae
- Do not drink water from the lake
- Rinse off after contact with water
- Do not allow dogs to lick fur prior to rinsing
Austin Watershed Protection is asking for the public's assistance in monitoring the situation. To report an illness to a person or pet, or to learn more information on toxic algae, visit this link.
