AUSTIN, Texas — City Manager Spencer Cronk has recommended designating two no-wake zones on Lake Austin instead of issuing a no-wake zone for the entirety of the Lake Austin shoreline, according to city documents.
His recommendations were approved by the council at a Feb. 6 meeting.
The two designated areas Cronk suggested are near the Pennybacker Bridge and the Walsh and Oyster Landing Area.
Here is a look at the areas:
In the city memo, Cronk said the creation of no-wake zones along the entire shoreline of Lake Austin, as originally recommended by the Lake Austin Taskforce, would create numerous practical problems and, for enforcement purposes, would require the purchase and maintenance of a significant number of buoys. The Lake Austin Task Force issued a report in 2013 that included the recommendation for the creation of no-wake zones along the shores of Lake Austin, according to the city memo. The Lake Austin Task Force recommended this action to calm traffic and increase safety on Lake Austin.
Cronk claims in the city memo that his solution of dedicating more focused no-wake zones would calm traffic in busy lake areas. The memo claims approval of the ordinance would improve safety on Lake Austin.
