AUSTIN, Texas — Some Central Texans are spending their Fourth of July cooling off on Lake Austin. But with the water packed with boaters, many people are parking illegally in the area – running the risk of getting towed.
Boaters say it’s a mad rush to get parking.
“I mean, I would say that you’re probably going to have a few thousand here on the water today,” Matthew Faxon, a Lake Austin boat operator, said Thursday.
Faxon said there is limited parking, with one small lot off to the side of the lake and one for trucks with boat trailers near the waterfront.
He said there isn’t even enough parking for people like him, who run businesses operating boats, and they’re out of options.
He said people have resorted to parking alongside the path leading to the lake and even the grassy median of the Loop 360 highway.
“People have been parking there for 10 years,” Faxon said. “It’s been an unwritten rule that people can do it for as long as I’ve known.”
He said earlier this week, a few new "No Parking" signs have popped up, but he doesn’t think that will stop people.
“I mean, they're going to ignore the signs because they have no choice. They have nowhere else to park,” he said.
Faxon said he’s heard that people have been getting towed and said it could be an issue later down the line.
Miranda Alonzo said Thursday was her first time at Lake Austin, and she was in a group of 30 people. She said her group chose to use a ridesharing service to get to the lake.
“It was crazy. A lot of people in our car said they were glad they didn’t actually drive because it would’ve been ridiculous to deal with,” she said.
Ramiro Ganesh said that's the riskiest part. He said he’s come to Lake Austin countless times in his seven years in town, and the parking lot is busy year-round.
With people parking cars near the highway to get to the lake, paired with people drinking and cars speeding by, he said it's a dangerous combination.
“So, many people use this on a consistent basis, not July 4th, but I mean, every single weekend – I’m sure every single week. This particular ramp is used so much, you would think they have more infrastructure and planning in place,” Ganesh said.
KVUE reached out to the Austin Police Department to confirm if cars have been getting towed in the area. We have not heard back yet.
