DALLAS — The lawsuit filed by two people who say they were injured in the crash involving Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice and SMU football player Theodore Knox is set to head to trial next year, court documents show.
Edvard Petrovskiy and Irina Gromova filed the lawsuit in Dallas County District Court on April 11, seeking at least $1 million in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages. The trial in the case is set for a jury trial on June 23, 2025, court records show.
Gromova was driving a Lexus SUV when the crash happened on March 31 on U.S. 75, and Petrovskiy was riding in the passenger seat, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges Petrovskiy and Gromova suffered multiple injuries, including brain trauma, lacerations to the face requiring stitches, contusions, disfigurement, and internal bleeding as a result of the crash.
Dashcam footage from the crash showed what appeared to be their vehicle get hit from behind, then spin as Rice and Knox lost control of their vehicles. Rice and Knox left the scene after the crash, police said.
Both Rice and Knox were arrested in the case on multiple charges: Six counts of collision involving bodily injury, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and one count of aggravated assault. All of the charges are felonies.
A second lawsuit, that didn't name Knox was filed later in April, alleges negligence on the part of Rice and seeks more than $1 million and a jury trial.
That second lawsuit was filed on behalf of Kamlesh Desai, who was driving a Toyota Sienna minivan on U.S. 75 when the crash happened.
Rice, who went to SMU before getting drafted by the Chiefs, grew up in North Richland Hills in Tarrant County. The latest court filing comes amid media speculation about whether or not Rice could face suspension because of the legal troubles related to the crash.
Knox, a junior cornerback from Baton Rouge, La., was suspended by SMU.
