LEANDER, Texas — The loved ones of a man who was injured in a mobile home fire in Leander now say that he has died.

Bill and Pamela Heiner's home on Cherry Hollow Crossing caught fire and was destroyed on Aug. 2. Pamela Heiner told KVUE she and her husband were in bed when they smelled smoke. When they awoke, the smoke was already so thick that they couldn't see.

"I climbed over the balcony and was just like, hanging onto the balcony. And I was trying to get my husband to come with me and he said, 'Go, just go call for help,'" Pamela Heiner said. "By the time I got back, he was already out ... he had been burned. He had gone back in for our dog."

Pamela Heiner said she and her husband rescued their dog, a 7-year-old terrier named Star, from the Williamson County Animal Shelter.

"It just meant everything to him that he would, that he could bring this dog from being scared of everybody into a loving home," Heiner said.

Star survived the fire unscathed, but Bill Heiner sustained significant burns over the top third of his torso, including his head, his face and his back, according to his wife. He was looking at several months in the hospital.

A GoFundMe page was created to help the Heiner family clean up their home and to purchase new furniture, appliances and more. As of Aug. 26, it has raised more than $9,200.
