Liberty Hill Police Chief Maverick Campbell has been fired, his lawyer confirmed to KVUE Saturday morning.
The lawyer told KVUE that he and Campbell were never given a reason for the termination. The Texas Municipal Police Association confirmed that the city council voted to fire Campbell on Monday.
According to the Liberty Hill Independent, councilmembers said the termination, which was voted for unanimously, was "for cause pursuant to Section 13 of his contract." However, according to The Independent, no other specific reasons were given and the council did not identify which portion of Section 13 of Campbell's contract was violated.
Campbell's termination comes after a roughly two-week investigation into his conduct. On March 1, the city council voted to place Campbell on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into his actions at the Law Enforcement Against Drugs (LEAD) conference.
At that March 1 special session, councilmembers said an incident took place on Feb. 23 and 24 at the LEAD conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Councilmembers did not go into detail about what the incident was and both the council's lead counsel and Campbell's lawyer declined to make any comments outside what was already in the public record.
While Campbell was on paid leave, Liberty Hill Lt. Royce Graeter was appointed the acting police chief. It is not clear at this time if Graeter will stay in that position.
