LIMERICK, Maine — A child from New Jersey died Wednesday after police say she suffered an unintentional injury while playing outside in Limerick.

It happened around noon on Saturday, June 1, on North Shore Drive, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.

Maine State Police investigators found that Lucy Morgan, 6, had been playing outside with her 10-year-old brother when the aluminum shaft of a badminton racquet became dislodged from its wooden handle, causing the shaft to strike the girl in the head and pierce through her skull.

She was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford before being flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She died Wednesday from her injuries, Moss said.

The children and their parents are from Stockholm, New Jersey, and were vacationing in Maine at the time of the incident, according to Moss.

"The Maine State Police would like to extend their deepest condolences to the Morgan family," the release stated.
