Man fleeing law enforcement jumps into Lady Bird Lake, AFD says

According to the AFD, the suspect appeared to be in good condition but initially refused to get into lake patrol's rescue boat.

AUSTIN -- Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Sunday afternoon after a suspect being sought by DPS jumped into Lady Bird Lake, the Austin Fire Department reported.

According to the DPS, officials were conducting a routine traffic stop when the suspect fled and reportedly jumped into the water off of the First Street bridge. DPS said the traffic violation occurred at 2:41 p.m. on Southwest Parkway at State Highway 71 North. It is unclear where the man drove to before jumping into the lake.

The AFD reported that the suspect is approximately 40 years old and appeared to be in good condition but was refusing to get into the lake patrol's rescue boat. By 4:30 p.m., officials said the suspect agreed to get onboard and was taken to be treated by EMS.

Austin-Travis County EMS said the man was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center for further evaluation.

The APD, AFD, ATCEMS and the Travis County Sheriff's Office assisted the DPS.

Emergency crews partially closed the Congress Avenue ridge until the incident was resolved.
