AUSTIN, Texas -- Police have arrested the man suspected of shooting and killing an 18-year-old man at a gas station in Northwest Austin on Wednesday, June 27.
Stanley Earl Pates, 24, was arrested Friday and charged with murder. He was booked into Williamson County Jail.
Police received the call about the shooting at approximately 5:01 p.m. APD said the shooting appears to have occurred in a gas station parking lot located in the 13000 block of Pond Springs Road near McNeil Drive, U.S. Highway 183 and Hunters Chase Drive.
At 5:12 p.m., ATCEMS pronounced the victim, later identified as Devon Gross, dead at the scene, APD said in a media briefing. EMS officials said treated another man in his 20s for minor non-life threatening injuries and transported him to a local hospital.
Austin police said an autopsy report determined Gross died from a gunshot wound.
Police originally told KVUE one person was detained and there were no other suspects. APD later said in a tweet that one suspect was still at large.
According to APD, preliminary information suggests this was a targeted attack and not a random incident.
One man said he thought fireworks were going off and a woman who works nearby told KVUE she counted ten gunshots.
"It was close enough, I've been around guns my whole life, so I knew it was gunshots and they were close," she said. "Hearing that there was actually a homicide or a murder in this vicinity is very scary. All of my colleagues and I go in that Valero all the time to get gas or pick up snacks or get a soda or something."
Pates' bail is set at $500,000.
