Manor, TX — On Thursday night Manor ISD is opening the doors of the brand new Manor Senior High School to the public for a community-wide open house.
MSHS is the district's newest campus geared specifically for grades 11-12 with a focus on college prep and real-world readiness. The school was made possible by a $48 million bond passed in 2014 with the goal of helping make the transition for students from high school to whatever their next step may be just a bit easier.
The three-story school features a vet tech and cosmetology lab, media center, black box theater, a functioning bistro, and 1,800 capacity top-fill gym.
"The philosophy really is preparing students and giving them an atmosphere where they're owning their own learning, owning their own space in order to be able to go to a UT Austin, a Baylor, a Rice and not feel overwhelmed," said Dr. Debora Aceves, principal of MSHS. "The ownership has already started -- kids wanting to know what is required to go to Manor ISD Senior High."
Aceves explained that in order to attend MSHS, students must have 12 college credits. By the time they graduate they will be able to walk the stage with at least 26 under their belt, putting them ahead by the time they come to college.
"That was the vision of our school board prior and our continuing superintendent to make sure our students are prepared for post-high school careers."
Thursday's Open House will begin with a ribbon cutting followed by a tour of the new school to community members from 5:30 through 8 p.m.
MSHS is located at 14832 FM 973, Manor, TX 78653.
Classes begin Monday, August 20.
