Mothers create ‘Marble Falls Mom Squad’ to help Texas flood victims

The 'Marble Falls Mom Squad' is helping those affected by historic flooding in Central Texas by doing their laundry.

KINGSLAND, Texas — The power of social media is bringing mothers living along the Highland Lakes together to help those cleaning up from recent historic flooding.

Horseshoe Bay resident Becca Schafer came up with the idea of the "Marble Falls Mom Squad" after helping some neighbors whose homes were flooded.

She realized the flooding left a lot of their clothes wet and dirty, and she wanted to help. Schafer spread the word online, and as of Tuesday afternoon, more than 100 mothers have signed up to help.

"They wanted so badly to contribute in some way to help the flood survivors, but perhaps they're stay-at-home moms with kids at home. They can't really leave the house," Schafer said.

The floodwaters from Lake LBJ left Kara Delancey's Kingsland home and her belongings drenched. It's something Delancey said she never expected.

"Never in my wildest dreams," she said.

Her house is now empty except for the tools used to clean things up and to dry the walls.

"We've done a very good job in here, so it's hard to see. Everything's gutted and gone," Delancey said.

Marks on the wall show how high the water got -- at least a few feet. She and her son made it out before the water got inside.

"It was just unbelievable. And I screamed and I cried. You know, just unbelievable," she said.

Much of the stuff that got wet sits outside her house, waiting to be thrown away. But the clothes that stayed behind haven't been thrown away.

Instead, Schafer -- and her squad of mother volunteers -- is making sure they get cleaned and dried.

"The laundry that they're being asked to do is not your typical load of laundry. It's full of mud, it's full of germs, it's full of bacteria. It's full of all kinds of debris," Schafer said. "Even one bag of laundry, one load of laundry, is so much of a commitment of love that these moms are giving our survivors."

With each clean load of laundry, there's a little bit of hope for Delancey when everything around her isn't so clean just yet.

"It's been amazing to have people like (Schafer) that can pull all this together and help all these people in need," she said.
