AUSTIN, Texas — Texas' iconic grocery chain is about to reopen its oldest storefront.
After roughly two years of construction, H-E-B announced its 145,000-square-foot building on South Congress Avenue and East Oltorf Street will open to shoppers starting Dec. 4.
According to a release from H-E-B, the new multi-level building will offer indoor and outdoor dining options on the ground floor, shopping on the second floor and more than 600 parking spots covering three above-ground levels.
Not only that, but the store says other new additions include fresh Sushiya sushi, H-E-B Meal Simple options, True Texas BBQ, store-made tortillas and more beer and wine.
Customers can also experience live cooking demonstrations, curbside pickup, Central Texas artwork, an H-E-B Flower Bar, a drive-thru pharmacy and more.
"This store is an important part of this neighborhood, and we hope this new design conveys the deep gratitude we have for our loyal customers who have supported our business for more than 60 years," H-E-B Group Vice President Central Texas Cathy Harm said in the release.
The South Congress H-E-B has been closed to customers since February 2022, with temporary shopping available at the Twin Oaks Shopping Center 2301 S. Congress Ave. Riverside H-E-B Plus! is another nearby alternative, located at 2508 E. Riverside Dr.
How old is the South Congress H-E-B?
The South Austin store was first built back in 1957, making it Austin's oldest H-E-B location to date.
The building originally covered roughly 25,000 square feet, then eventually increased to 69,000 square feet.
Customers can visit the new store at 2400 S. Congress Ave.
