New neurosurgery robot, ROSA, debuts in Central Texas

The ROSA robotic arm aims to make neurosurgery both quicker and safer at Dell Seton Medical Center.

AUSTIN — At the Dell Seton Medical Center, they're always trying to be the best. Getting the best employees in the country and also getting the best technology. Their goal is to be the best, not only in the state but in the country.

That goal is why they feel they needed the best equipment for their neurosurgery department.

"It's more accurate, it's faster, safer to do it with robot assistance," said Dr. Robert Buchanan, the chief of neurosurgery at Seton Healthcare. "With the ROSA, it cut down on our operating room time as well and the patient went home the next day."

He and other neurosurgeons at the hospital are now using the robotic arm to help keep patients safer. The software inside the machine analyzes 3D brain scans and uses that info to create a virtual map of the patient's head. Using that map, the robot arm makes surgeries fly by. And no matter what type of brain surgery, it can be accurate down to less than a millimeter.

While it's not the first in the state, it is the first in Central Texas. Now, people won't have to travel to Houston for these surgeries.

"Which is a game changer for the neurosurgical care of patients here in Central Texas," said Dr. Buchanan. "Obviously, we aren't going to be left behind in technology and not only do we want to be not left behind, but driving technology."

All in an attempt to be the best by bringing the newest technology and the best care to Central Texas.
