APD searching for driver in hit-and-run that killed motorcyclist in North Austin

The motorcyclist crashed into the back of an SUV, fell into the road and was hit by an unknown vehicle, police said.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is searching for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened on the North MoPac Expressway on Sunday morning, July 28.

APD said around 3:38 a.m., officers responded to a crash between a motorcycle and an SUV in the 8600 block of N. MoPac northbound, near the intersection with North Capital of Texas Highway.

The motorcyclist crashed into the back of the SUV, fell into the road and was hit by an unknown vehicle, police said. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the SUV stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The unknown vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.

This is being investigated as Austin’s 45th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 48 deaths for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 53 fatal crashes resulted in 53 deaths.
