Police respond to car meetup in northeast Austin Saturday night

Police say they received calls that people were driving recklessly in the parking lot and shooting off fireworks.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police made at least one arrest at a car meetup late Saturday night in northeast Austin.

The meetup happened outside the AMC DINE-IN Tech Ridge 10 theater off U.S. 183 and West Parmer Lane. Police said they received calls that people were driving recklessly in the parking lot and shooting off fireworks around 10:55 p.m.

The Austin Police Department said 21-year-old Kevin Arce was arrested during the incident for failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to have a child passenger in a safety seat. No injuries were reported.

Austin and other Texas cities have struggled with car meetups in the past, with some of those meetups turning into dangerous "street takeovers."

A new law passed in 2023 increased the penalties for anyone caught participating in illegal street racing.

Another law passed last year allows cars used in those takeovers to be impounded. Previous laws needed property damage or someone to be hurt before the car could be impounded.

Authorities said Arce's vehicle was impounded after Saturday night's incident.
