AUSTIN, Texas — Four officers with the Austin Police Department are on administrative duty following a deadly shooting Sunday night.
According to APD, officers got a 911 call just before 8 p.m. at an apartment complex on Northgate Boulevard near Research Boulevard in North Austin.
When they arrived, they discovered an armed man, who they believed was intoxicated, holding his wife and child hostage.
According to police, officers made callouts to the man in English and in Spanish. At some point, the man walked out onto the balcony and aimed a weapon at police. APD fired at the man using less lethal rounds before the man went back inside.
APD says they called SWAT before making the decision to go inside the apartment because they believed the wife and child were in danger. The man opened fire on officers before APD returned fire. After he was shot, the man ignored commands from police and reached for his gun before he was shot again by officers. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the wife and child were rescued from the apartment and uninjured during the incident. APD Interim Chief Robin Henderson said no officers were hurt during the shooting and that everything was captured on body camera. Henderson said that footage would be released to the public within 10 business days, per department policy.
A total of four APD officers and one Texas DPS trooper were involved in the shooting. Now, an administrative investigation by internal affairs is underway, while a second criminal investigation led by detectives, DPS, and the Travis County District Attorney's Office begins.
